SUPERFOOD: NUTRITIONAL YEAST

When I first heard the words “Nutritional Yeast” I thought to myself, “Yuck, why would I want to put yeast ON my food?”

I really didn’t pay much more attention to it until someone recommended it to me once again just a few years ago. I saw it as more of a fad, to be honest. But because I kept hearing about it, I needed to research and find out more… So that’s exactly what I did.

Much to my surprise, this truly is a SUPER Superfood.

For those of us who avoid dairy, are lactose intolerant, you don’t eat a lot of meat, or you are vegan, it’s possible you may be lacking in the necessary amount of B Vitamins.

Nutritional Yeast is LOADED with B vitamins. Not only that, but depending on the brand, it can be loaded with other vitamins and minerals or micronutrients.

If you happened to catch my video series on Superfoods, I describe the 3 different types of yeast (baker’s, brewer’s, and nutritional) and the difference between them. I also mention the difference between fortified and unfortified Nutritional Yeast. You can view that here.

Bragg’s is a popular brand of Nutritional Yeast and is a great option in particular because it is fortified. It contains extra vitamins, minerals, and nutrients. You will experience a large number of benefits from just 1 serving or 1 Tablespoon/5 grams.

You may have up to 2 servings a day but just understand the other health benefit is it also contains fiber. So always make sure to hydrate well.

Here is an overview of the Nutritional Benefits:

(If it is a fortified Nutritional Yeast it should contain the following)

A full spectrum of B vitamins: thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, folate, B6, pantheonic acid, folic acid, niacin. (does not contain B12)

important minerals like chromium, phosphorus, zinc, selenium, and magnesiuma complete source of proteingood source of fiberlow in fatgluten-freelow in sodiumsoy-freeno artificial flavors or colorsveganGMO-freecomplete amino acid profile

AND, it also has a wonderful nutty, cheesy flavor that can be added on top of many of our favorite dishes. So for those of us who miss sprinkling cheese onto our foods, this is a nice alternative.

Now I add it to whatever I can, not just for the nutritional benefits, but for the cheesy/nutty taste.

As we say here in Mexico, “Buen Provecho!”
